How To Combine Strength And Finesse For Perfect Putt Shots

To be successful at putting the ball means you have to have total confidence in your ability to make the shot, each and every time. You have to be eager, sure of yourself and maybe a little cocky. However, keep in mind there is a fine line between going after what you want in the competitive mode and putting the ball with too much force and aggression.

Learn To Use Finesse And The Right Amount Of Aggression

When a long putt is staring you in the face you’ll probably have to use a little more strength in your swing. The key to hitting a firmer and more aggressive putt is to lengthen your backstroke. It is NOT by swinging the club harder and faster.

You need just the right amount of aggressiveness to be the kind of golfer who is knocking down putts all over the green. Throwing muscle behind your putts can be a little bit tricky. And there are definite drawbacks to using muscle, rather than finesse, on your putts.

For example, if you hit the ball too hard, it can run right through the break. Granted, speed is important. But you can’t forget about the line. Forcing the ball into the hole will generally not work. Another problem is that harder and faster putts are likely to hit the hole and then spin out.

So, to improve and perfect your putts, consider decreasing some of the muscle you use and concentrate on putting with finesse. For more distance, increase the length of your backstroke. Learn to concentrate on the line to the hole. Pick out the target (which is not necessarily the hole) and hit to the target. With practice, you’ll find a great improvement in your putting.

I was taught a great putting drill years ago. Put the ball one foot from the hole; put your putter face in contact with the ball; then drag the ball into the hole. Gives you a great feeling of stroking through the ball and not hitting it.
