Dangers On The Putting Green

Once you ball is on the green, the ball should be safe, right? Think again! There are all kinds of obstacles or annoyances waiting for you on the green to disrupt that perfect putt.

What are some of these dangers to putting that are waiting for you? Here’s a short list:

1. Grass: How can short, trimmed grass on the green become a problem? Even though the smooth surface on the green is maintained and well-kept, keep in mind that it is still grass. Grass grows! A small patch of grass that is higher than the other grass can get in the way of your perfect putt.

2. Untouched Grass Around the Hole: Because people walk all over the green, the grass gets a lot of traffic. People making their putts, walking up to get the ball from the hole, walking around to analyze their shot. All of these things contribute to traffic on the green. But the 6 to 10 inches that are right around the hole rarely gets walked on. This can cause an uneven level of grass and cause the ball to move out of line.

3. Leftover Footprints: It’s common courtesy not to step in the way of your fellow golfer’s shots on the green. Doing so can leave footprints. But what about that group ahead of you? You can bet there are all kinds of footprints left from that group walking all over the green before you get there. Those footprints may not be visible to you, but they are there. Those footprints can (and will) interfere with the line of travel of your putt.

So be aware of these hidden hazards or annoyances once you get on the green. There isn’t much you can do about them. You may just have to take them in stride.
