Putting And The Need To Control Speed

Whether you make that putt or not all comes down to the speed of the ball. Another way to look at it is that the pressure that you apply on your swing is a major determinate of your success as a putter.

The Catch 22

Obviously, if you hit the ball too hard, it’s going to go beyond the hole. And, as as result, you’ll probably need to make an extended recovery shot. On the other hand, if you don’t put enough pressure on your swing, the ball is going to come up short of the hole.

Another effect of hitting the ball too hard is your shot will give you less break or curve. As an example, if you hit the ball too hard and you calculated six or seven inches of break, the ball will most likely break just two or three inches and will end up missing the target. By using too much speed, even a short put can cause you to miss the hole and have the ball lip out.

On the other hand, not enough speed will cause the ball to break even more than your calculations and miss the hole.

Therefore, the success of the putt depends upon the speed of the ball. Speed, as well as distance, go hand in hand on the putting green.
