Topped Shots

As a beginner golfer, it goes without saying that you are going to make an embarrassing shot once in a while. Making these kinds shots should actually be considered a learning experience.

One of the more embarrassing shots to be made, more so than a thin or fat shot, is the topped shot. A topped shot occurs when the clubhead barely grazes the ball during the swing. This results in the ball dribbling away for a short distance It’s a classic beginner golfer swing.

Causes Of A Topped Shot

The ball is topped when your body moves up and down throughout the swing. This causes the club head to rise up just before impact with the ball.

Avoiding A Topped Shot

This frustrating and embarrassing shot can be prevented by simply keeping your head as level as possible during the swing. Be aware of any up and down movements you may be making with your body. Probably the best way to see if you are moving up and down is to record your swing. This way you can see exactly what you’re doing and what parts of you golf swing technique need to be modified.
