Lost Golf Ball

Every once in a while, even the best golfers lose a golf ball. Many golf courses have out-of-bounds areas and areas of rough that will swallow a ball and you’ll never see it again.

What happens if your ball is lost and gone forever by a hazard? You must continue with a new ball. Here’s how:

First of all, find the nearest spot on the course that allows you a complete relief from the hazard area. Mark this spot with a tee. The term “complete relief” means that your feet and the ball are completely clear from the hazard. This could be an area that is several feet from the hazard or as short as a few inches.

Next, measure outwards from the area by one or two club lengths away from the hole your are shooting for. The number of club lengths is determined by the rules of the hazard. As an example, a water hazard allows you to use two club lengths for relief. On the other hand, a cart path or sprinkler hazard only allows one club length. Once you determine and take the number of club lengths, using another tee, mark that spot, as well.

Now it’s time to drop the new ball. Stand where you placed the second marker tee. Hold the ball out at arm’s length at shoulder height. Now drop the ball straight down to the ground. Don’t toss or spin the ball. You’re now ready to make a shot with the new ball.
